Art Activity Area

We have a BUNCH of fun hands-on activities for fairgoers of all ages to enjoy at this year’s event including:

  1. Join the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum staff from 10am-5pm on Saturday, and 10-4pm on Sunday. Design, build, and test your creations using a variety of hands-on materials. Experiment with magnets all while creating a work of art, or try to build your own sculpture using just dowels and bands! Finally, prepare some decor for the fall season using watercolors and wax.
  2. Inside the Gutman Gallery – Mask Making Workshop [118 N. Fourth Ave.] from 12-4 each day of the fair. Join us for an exciting mask making workshop in Gutman Gallery! Participants can design and decorate their very own masks, using provided materials – paper mache masks, paint, inks, markers, glitter, feathers, fabric, foam, wire, beads, decorative elements, and much more! $5 fee for supplies. Drop-in or reserve a time in advance at: https://my-site-109674-104618.square.site/events
  3. Behind the Gutman Gallery – join us each day of the fair for live mural painting** by Ypsilanti-based muralist and graffiti artist, Gary Horton. Throughout the fair, Gary will be painting an abstract and colorful mural on the upper half of the wall behind the gallery, adding to the mural he painted on the lower half of the wall last year during this event.
About Gary Horton: Gary Horton studied fine art and design at the Institute of Pittsburgh, where he developed his unique style and range. While being classically trained in oil painting, Gary would spend late nights in train yards and rooftops learning the forbidden art of graffiti. Today you can see the influence of these two styles in the community.
His murals and oversized paintings can be seen across Michigan and beyond. He specializes in bright, colorful, and imaginative designs that help bring joy and wonder to an area that may otherwise be seen as ordinary.

**This activity is supported by Destination Ann Arbor.
